Heritage Meets Innovation: 30 Years of Australian Craftsmanship

Heritage Meets Innovation: 30 Years of Australian Craftsmanship

Why Craftsmanship Still Matters

In construction and renovation, the details are never just details. Skirting boards, architraves, doors, and profiles shape how a space feels, how rooms connect, and how long a finish truly lasts. When those elements are rushed, imported, or treated as an afterthought, the entire project suffers.

At Australian Moulding & Door Company (AMDC), craftsmanship has never been optional. It is the standard. From the beginning, the business has believed that every client deserves an exceptional experience — delivered by a highly trained team, supported by the right technology, and underpinned by a total commitment to quality materials and outcomes.

That philosophy still guides everything AMDC does today.

AMDC’s 30-Year Journey: Built on Heritage Homes

AMDC’s story didn’t start in a factory — it started on heritage building sites across Melbourne.

Founder Hugh Gilchrist discovered a recurring problem while restoring older homes: original architraves and skirtings were difficult, often impossible, to match. Standard profiles didn’t respect period architecture, and imported options lacked the accuracy and quality required for heritage work.

Rather than compromise, Hugh and his father created a solution.

In the mid-1990s, they purchased an old moulding machine — worn, outdated, and affectionately nicknamed “the piece of junk.” Instead of replacing it, they rebuilt it from the ground up, pulling it apart, replacing motors and bearings, repainting it, and bringing it back to life. The original Gubisch plate still remains on the machine today — a quiet reminder of AMDC’s hands-on beginnings.

What started as a practical answer to a real industry gap became the foundation of an Australian manufacturing business built around custom mouldings, accuracy, and respect for architectural heritage.

Growing With Purpose: Bayswater Manufacturing Takes Shape

As demand grew, so did the business — but always with intention.

In 2000, AMDC purchased its first factory in Bayswater, Victoria, a 700-square-metre space that marked the company’s transition from small-scale operation to dedicated manufacturer. Over the following years, the facility expanded steadily:

  • 2,000 sqm by 2004
  • 3,000 sqm by 2006
  • 4,000 sqm by 2008

Each expansion was driven by the same goal: improve consistency, increase capability, and maintain control over quality.

Remaining in Bayswater wasn’t accidental. Manufacturing locally meant AMDC could stay close to the trades, builders, and designers it served — and respond quickly to the realities of Australian construction.

The Evolution of Materials & Technology

Craftsmanship at AMDC has always evolved alongside technology.

In 2006, the company invested in a priming line, transitioning from unprimed production to handling approximately 70% of work as primed product — reducing on-site labour and improving finish quality for builders and painters.

More recently, AMDC continued this evolution with the purchase of advanced machinery, including a five-axis router in 2022. This investment expanded the company’s ability to complete full lock and pre-hinge preparation for doors, jambs, and seals — opening new possibilities for customers seeking precision and efficiency.

Throughout every upgrade, the focus has remained the same: use technology to support craftsmanship, not replace it.

A Modern Bayswater Facility, Built for Quality Control

In 2020, AMDC brought its long-term vision to life, moving into a purpose-built 6,000-square-metre manufacturing facility at 863 Mountain Highway, Bayswater.

Today, this site brings together machining, finishing, priming, and quality control under one roof. Every profile, moulding, and door is produced with oversight at each stage — ensuring consistency, accuracy, and reliability from start to finish.

For clients seeking custom mouldings in Australia, this level of control matters. It allows AMDC to deliver tailored solutions, maintain short lead times, and uphold the quality standards that mass-imported products simply can’t match.

Experience That Delivers Better Results

Nearly three decades of manufacturing experience translates into more than longevity — it delivers better outcomes.

AMDC understands how mouldings are installed on site, how heritage profiles need to align, how painters work, and how builders schedule trades. That insight helps prevent common issues like misalignment, inconsistent finishes, and unnecessary rework.

As the business expanded beyond Victoria into ACT, New South Wales, South Australia, and Queensland, that experience scaled with it — supporting projects across a wide range of architectural styles and construction methods.

In 2022, the next generation joined the family business, reinforcing AMDC’s long-term commitment to Australian manufacturing, continuity, and ongoing improvement.

A Showroom Designed to Inspire Specification

In 2024, AMDC unveiled a milestone project: a state-of-the-art showroom in Bayswater, more than a decade in the making.

Featuring 40 immersive display suites, the showroom allows builders, designers, architects, and renovators to see, feel, and experience architectural mouldings, timber products, and doors in real-life applications. It’s not a catalogue on a wall — it’s a practical specification environment designed to support confident decision-making.

Crafted in Australia, Built to Last

From restoring heritage homes to supporting contemporary builds, AMDC’s journey reflects the power of doing things properly — even when it takes longer.

As an Australian moulding manufacturer, the company continues to combine heritage knowledge with modern manufacturing, delivering timber and architectural mouldings that respect the past while meeting today’s expectations.
